Why a signature photo is not a transparent PNG

An email signature and many remote contracts need the handwriting by itself, so the ink sits on the document. A photo of a signature on white paper is still a picture of the page. Clearing that paper is not the same job as cutting a person out of a photo.

White paper is still part of the picture

A scan or a phone photo records the sheet, not just the pen. Those white pixels are opaque. Pasting the photo into a document or an email signature places that rectangle on the layout, even when the paper looks blank.

Transparency means the paper pixels are empty. The document or email background shows through, and only the strokes remain.

This is not background removal

Background removal separates a person or a product from a scene. A signature is thin ink on a mostly empty sheet. A model built for portraits can drop fine strokes or leave a gray haze where the paper was.

Handwriting needs a split between ink and paper tone. That keeps the stroke and clears the sheet. It will not cut out a face or a product. A signature is also a personal mark: the scan does not need to leave your device to become a transparent PNG.

Before you make the signature file

Do

  • Photograph or scan dark ink on a light sheet, with as little shadow as possible.
  • Keep PNG or WebP when the destination supports transparency.
  • Place the transparent file on the document so the page background shows through.

Don't

  • Paste the original photo into a contract and expect the paper to vanish.
  • Use JPEG as the master signature file. It cannot store empty pixels.
  • Run a portrait background remover and assume thin handwriting will survive.

Which separation you need

Keep the handwriting

You have ink on paper and need that ink alone for an email signature or a document.

Transparent signature

Cut out a person or product

The subject is a person or an object in a scene, not thin strokes on a blank sheet.

Image Background Remover
Can I use a photo of my signature on white paper?

Not as-is. The white paper is still in the image, so it lands as a rectangle on the document or in the email.

Why does a JPEG signature show a box?

JPEG cannot store transparency. Empty areas are filled, usually with white, which brings the paper back.

Will a background remover make a signature PNG?

It is built for people and products. Thin strokes are easy to lose. A signature file should separate ink from paper, not a subject from a scene.
